DSIP is a short, naturally occurring neuropeptide first identified through research into the regulation of sleep. Its name reflects the context of its discovery — it was isolated in connection with delta-wave activity, the slow brain-wave pattern characteristic of deep sleep.

Investigations into DSIP have centred largely on its role in sleep regulation, including its relationship to sleep onset and the structure of sleep cycles. Beyond this primary area, research has also examined its apparent influence on the body’s stress-response systems, with studies exploring potential interactions with hormones such as cortisol and its possible involvement in modulating responses to physical stress.
