Bacteriostatic water is sterile water that contains a small amount of added benzyl alcohol — typically around 0.9% — which acts as a bacteriostatic agent, meaning it inhibits the growth of bacteria within the solution. This added preservative is what distinguishes it from ordinary sterile water and allows a vial to be accessed more than once while reducing the risk of microbial contamination between uses.
